Focus Core vs Premium vs Premium Max

The honest version: all three share the same measurement core. Same ±1 mm ranging error, same 2 mm at 10 metres, same 2 million points per second, same 4.4 kg body. What changes is reach, the camera, and how Flash is licensed. Ranging error and 3D point accuracy are separate figures, and neither is a guarantee of project accuracy.

Focus or Orbis

Tripod or walking, the answer is the tolerance

A Focus goes on a tripod, holds still, and gives you 2 mm at 10 metres from every setup. An Orbis is carried, mapping as you walk at roughly 5 mm, then stops for a static Flash capture at 2 mm in about fifteen seconds when an area needs it.

Firms whose work is mostly interiors and as-builts, with a handful of tight-tolerance areas per job, usually cover both jobs with an Orbis. Firms working exteriors, facades, structures or long sight lines still want a Focus on a tripod. If you are between the two, tell us the deliverable and we will say which one we would actually put on the quote.

Applications

Where FARO equipment earns its keep

The four jobs we get asked to configure a Focus or an Orbis for most often. If yours is not here, tell us the deliverable and we will spec against it.

FARO terrestrial laser scanner capturing building services for a scan-to-BIM model
01

Scan-to-BIM

Capture existing conditions to millimetre tolerance for architecture, structure and MEP models, then register in SCENE and hand off to Revit.

Laser scanner set up inside an industrial plant capturing pipework and steel
02

Industrial and plant

Pipe racks, vessels and steel captured before a shutdown, so fabrication is checked against the plant as it actually stands rather than the drawings.

Terrestrial scanner documenting a historic stone facade
03

Heritage and facades

Ornate stonework, monuments and facades documented without touching the structure. This is where the 400 metre reach of the Premium Max earns its place.

04

Renovation and retrofit

Structures captured once they are stripped back, so the retrofit design is drawn against the slab, columns and services that are actually there.

Software

What runs the hardware

FARO Connect

Capture and registration for mobile scanning, including Orbis trajectories and Flash captures.

SCENE

The registration and processing environment for Focus data: targets, cloud-to-cloud, colourisation, and export.

Stream

On-site capture app that runs the scanner from a tablet and lets you check coverage before leaving site.

Sphere XG

Cloud platform for hosting, sharing and reviewing captured data with a project team.

FAQ

Buying FARO equipment

Do you supply FARO equipment in Canada?

Yes. We supply and support the current FARO Focus line and the Orbis mobile scanner across every Canadian province. Everything we supply is genuine, brand-new equipment carrying the full manufacturer warranty.

Do you supply FARO equipment in the United States?

Yes. The same FARO range is supplied across the United States, quoted in USD, with the same genuine equipment and full manufacturer warranty.

What is the difference between Focus Core, Premium and Premium Max?

Range, camera, Flash licensing and the included PanoCam mount. All three publish the same ±1 mm ranging error, the same 2 mm accuracy at 10 metres, and the same 2 million points per second, in the same 4.4 kg body. Core reaches 100 metres, Premium 200, and Premium Max 400. Premium Max also ships with a perpetual Flash Technology licence and the PanoCam mount included. Software and Flash entitlement are confirmed per configuration rather than assumed from the model.

Is the Premium Max more accurate than the Core?

No. FARO publishes identical accuracy figures across all three models. A Focus Core is exactly as accurate and exactly as fast as a Premium Max inside 100 metres. You are buying reach, not precision.

How do I tell the current Focus models apart from older ones?

FARO's October 2024 user manual states that the latest models can be recognised by the blue stripes on the scanner housing. Models without those stripes are the previous generation, and the earlier FocusS and FocusM units are different hardware again.

Where does the Orbis fit against the Focus line?

The Orbis is a mobile scanner rather than a tripod scanner. You walk a site capturing at 5 mm precision, then stop and take a static Flash capture at 2 mm in about fifteen seconds. It suits firms whose work is mostly interiors with occasional tight-tolerance areas, and can do the job of two tools at one purchase price.

How much does a FARO scanner cost?

Pricing is sent by quote. The final price depends on the accessories, software licences, and support included with the unit, so we send an itemized quote rather than one number. Most quotes go out within one business day.

Who you are dealing with

The people specifying your configuration have run this equipment on real sites, not just sold it. That is why a quote comes back with a recommendation and a reason, rather than a line item.

  • Authorized CHC Navigation dealer for Canada and the United States.
  • North American stock, so availability is a real answer and not a transatlantic guess.
  • Every specification sourced. Where a figure is a manufacturer claim under their own test conditions, we say so.
